Artificial intelligence has changed significantly since the last edition of the Artificial Intelligence Researchers Association’s strategic whitepaper was published in 2024. At the same time, Aotearoa New Zealand’s AI landscape has continued to develop, with new national strategy, changes across the research system and emerging investment in AI research capability.
This webinar will launch the third edition of Aotearoa New Zealand Artificial Intelligence: A Strategic Approach and bring together its authors to discuss where New Zealand stands today, what has changed since 2024, and what they argue needs to happen next.
Under the theme “From Aspiration to Delivery: Holding the Gain, and Closing the Gap to Our Peers,” the 2026 edition takes a more delivery-focused approach than previous editions proposing an ambition for New Zealand and recommendations is linked to specific areas of national AI capability, together with proposed ownership, milestones and measures.
The webinar will provide an opportunity to hear directly from the authors about the thinking behind the paper, explore its recommendations, and discuss what a stronger and more connected AI ecosystem could mean for researchers, industry, government and communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
